This year for many of us has been one of despair, anger, and uncertainty. I know for me personally with my anxiety disorder, I haven’t had as severe spikes of panic, but that underlying feeling has been there about 80% of the time (if you have generalised anxiety disorder, you know what I’m referring to).
Despite this, I thought I would dedicate this blog post to review my New Years Resolutions for 2020, and write here what I have planned for 2021. I know of many people including some close loved ones who believe that New Years Resolutions are useless, but for me personally- it allows me to review my situation in life, and think “well maybe this can be done in the upcoming year”.
Review: My 2020 New Years Resolutions
The below were what I had written down for myself at the end of 2019.
- Be more social.
- Become a first time homeowner.
- Travel more and visit new places.
- Complete my Payroll Technican qualification (for my full time job).
- Study a 2nd language to a position were I could sit a A1/A2 test.
Now I must say- considering there was a global pandemic that threw many countries including my own into a financial mess, I think I did a solid job in 2020. I didn’t get to achieve all of these, but I’m proud of the things I did achieve.
Through my work, I was offered to complete a Payroll Technican qualification through CIPP which was from January to July, and passed this. Honestly studying this is what got me through the initial months of Coronavirus. I have also been studying Spanish in my spare time which I really enjoy. I’m hoping that once the exam centres and colleges allow external students, I can pay an exam entry for this (whether I’ll do A1 or go straight to A2, I’m not sure).
With the first time buyer situation, unfortunately these never came to fruition, and although I’ve had some friends who’ve become first time buyers recently, for me and my boyfriend, we saw the interest rates, and the inflated house prices, and thought “no thanks”.
Travelling: Definitely not because Coronavirus. That’s all that needs to be said.
Considering my social anxiety, I think I did an amazing job in being more social. I found a great community of people earlier this year who have the same thing in common: wanting to be involved in the community. Through this I’ve made some great friends from all different backgrounds, and it’s ended up with friends I can chat with about anything, and lockdown permitting- be able to arrange to hang out, and have drinks, food, and banter. Through this confidence, I ended up also meeting other women from my area (mostly online because lockdown), but the plans to meet up with them after this is all over is truly exciting for me. Being more actively social was a resolution of mine for since 2018, and I finally nailed it.
New Years Resolution: 2021
This is the list I’ve compiled for what I hope to achieve in 2021. Some will probably be counting on the fact that the financial market and Coronavirus will be mostly resolved, but some I know I can do for myself.
- Become a first time homeowner.
- Complete a language qualification in Spanish.
- Progress more in my career (whether through a promotion, or in some kind of higher standing).
- Travel more: maybe a holiday?!
- Be more active- do walks and/or more exercise.
- Focus on mental health; continuing this blog, talking about it on social media, and volunteering for the organisation I am a part of.
- Stay in touch more with family and friends aka not going off social media for 6+ hours and coming back to 10+ messages (I’m sorry because I end up doing this to the people I care most about- it’s just because I’m not on my phone!)
- 5000 Instagram followers (kind of a joke, but that would also be cool right?! (username b3thywood))
I feel like considering how much of a dumpster fire 2020 was, I have great hope that 2021 is a better year for all of us- I mean, how can it get any worse?
